1 Introduction

This article introduces the importance of language learning motivation and second language pragmatic competence in pragmatics and second language acquisition research, and points out the impact of individual differences such as gender, age, learning motivation, and cultural background on pragmatic acquisition. Special emphasis was placed on the influence of learning motivation on second language learners' use of second language opportunities, attention to pragmatic information, and learning initiative. The book explores the relationship between the learning motivation of Chinese English learners and their second language receptive and productive pragmatic abilities through quantitative and qualitative analysis, providing theoretical support and methodological guidance for second language pragmatics research and foreign language teaching practice.

2 Content Introduction

The book consists of 8 chapters, with the first 3 chapters being the introduction and methodology, and the last 5 chapters being the main body, exploring the relationship between language learning motivation and second language pragmatic competence. Chapter 1 provides an overview of the current state of second language pragmatics research, clarifying the research objectives and structural framework. Chapter 2 reviews empirical research on second language pragmatics and learning motivation theory. Chapter 3 elaborates on the research methodology. Chapter 4 investigates the motivation level of participants and its relationship with gender and major. It is found that cultural interests and attitudes towards the second language group are the main motivational factors, with female students and English majors having higher motivation levels. Chapter 5 explores the relationship between learning motivation and second language pragmatic awareness, and finds that pragmatic awareness is related to attitudes towards the second language group and learners' level of effort. Chapter 6 investigates the participants' ability to understand conversational implicature and finds that pragmatic comprehension is related to their attitudes towards the second language group, cultural interests, learning attitudes, and their ideal second language self. Chapter 7 discusses the impact of learners' motivation level on their output of complaining speech acts, and finds that high motivation learners are better at using pragmatic strategies. Chapter 8 summarizes the research findings, discusses the significance and shortcomings of the study, and looks forward to future research directions.
