The English translation of tea company profiles is crucial for overseas promotion and brand building, but there is currently a lack of research based on evaluation theory. The aim of this study is to analyze and improve the English translation of tea company profiles, enhance translation quality, and strengthen cultural marketing. The introduction of a tea company includes its history, culture, and knowledge of tea studies, covering professional terms such as tea product types, quality, and efficacy. Evaluation theory focuses on the expression of evaluation and attitude in language, which plays an important role in regulating the interpersonal meaning of corporate introductions. This study combines evaluation theory with the English translation of tea company introductions to explore the interpretation of attitude meaning in the original text and the reproduction of attitude meaning in the translation, in order to improve the accuracy, effectiveness, and acceptability of English translation and provide reference for the English translation of tea company introductions.
Evaluation theory is an extension of the study of interpersonal meaning in systemic functional linguistics, used for discourse analysis of multiple types of texts, expressing author perspectives, establishing communicative relationships, and constructing discourse. The company profile has interpersonal characteristics, and the evaluation system includes three subsystems: intervention, attitude, and hierarchy. The attitude evaluation resources for English and Chinese company introductions are basically the same, but there are cross-cultural differences. For example, Chinese company introductions have fewer emotional resources and use more judgment resources, while English company introduction judgment resources mostly belong to the social dignity type. The differences in thinking patterns and value orientations between the East and the West result in different language styles for attitude resources in Chinese and English company introductions. The evaluation theory is applicable to the study of translating enterprise introductions into English, and it is necessary to explore in depth how to grasp the attitude evaluation resources of the source text, evoke emotional recognition from the audience, and facilitate the establishment of corporate image and cultural dissemination.
This chapter introduces a self built parallel corpus of small local tea enterprises in Chinese and English, including introductions of three key leading enterprises. The corpus includes both paper texts and texts downloaded from the official website, totaling 24920 words. The text covers aspects such as company profile, tea plantation cultivation, production and processing, industry university research, sales market, development history, corporate honors, product center, and brand culture. The study adopts the new framework of evaluation system proposed by He Wei and Ma Zijie (2020) from the perspective of ecological linguistics to explore the categories, orientations, and functions of attitude resources in the original text, as well as the meaning reproduction in the translation.
Explored the transformation and reproduction of attitude resources in the process of translating tea company profiles into English. Tea companies mainly use positive attitude resources to build their corporate image, involving three dimensions: emotions, judgment, and appreciation. Emotional resources are mainly related to corporate vision, judgment resources include social judgment and constraints, related to brand philosophy, corporate image, and social responsibility, while appreciation resources are related to product business. In English translation, the translator needs to fully reproduce the attitude and evaluation significance of the original text, making the translation equivalent to the original text or adopting flexible strategies.
The English translation of a company profile should focus on attitude resource conversion and audience emotional identification. The attitude resources of Chinese and English tea companies are similar, but there are cross-cultural differences. The English translation should reproduce the meaning of attitude evaluation, and the translator needs to adjust or transform resources to arouse the recognition of overseas audiences, enhance the recognition and effectiveness of the translation. Translators should enhance their professional and knowledge literacy, establish positive values, assume social responsibility, adhere to professional ethics, serve the target language audience, achieve cross-cultural communication, maintain the correct attitude orientation, and ensure the effective dissemination of cultural values.
