1 Introduction

The importance of examples in academic writing was discussed, and it was pointed out that examples are the core rhetorical function and key link of academic discourse. In recent years, the use of example language in English academic writing has received attention, with research focusing on the word realization and meaning patterns of example discourse behavior. The Chinese academic community has also shown interest in using examples as a language, believing that examples are an important discourse behavior in modern Chinese, related to important discourse functions, and difficult for learners of Chinese as a foreign language to master. Current research mainly focuses on the part of speech classification, syntax, and pragmatic features of individual examples, lacking a systematic exploration of the resources of example discourse behavior phrases. There is also no discussion on the use of example language and its specific meanings in academic writing. This article is based on the corpus of Chinese academic papers and adopts a local grammar path to observe the phrase implementation of exemplification behavior in Chinese academic discourse, explore the meaning rules of exemplification language, and aim to provide inspiration for teaching academic writing in Chinese as a foreign language.

2 Literature Review

Exemplifying discourse plays a crucial role in connecting abstract concepts with concrete things in academic discourse, and is an important means of scientific argumentation. However, foreign language learners face difficulties in using example language in academic writing. The act of using examples in Chinese language has three linguistic features: association with specific particles, rich syntactic functions, and complex pragmatic functions. Foreign students mainly rely on a few particles to express examples in written Chinese, which differs in frequency and syntactic structure from native speakers. Existing research mostly focuses on individual particles, lacking systematic descriptions of phrases or collocation features, insufficient exploration of teaching methods and content, and insufficient attention to micro meanings. Local grammar research focuses on the lexical semantic patterns of specific discourse behaviors, extracting sentences through corpus methods and conducting semantic analysis to reveal the ways in which the meaning of discourse behaviors is realized. Local grammar has the characteristics of locality, functionality, lexicality, and category clarity, which can provide precise and concise semantic descriptions for specific discourse behaviors. The study of partial grammar in citing languages has made progress in the field of English, and the analysis of citing discourse behavior in Chinese academic discourse is expected to provide new perspectives and methods for teaching Chinese academic writing.

3 Research Methods

Introduced the construction of a corpus of Chinese academic papers and research methods for local grammar. The corpus contains 80 high impact factor Chinese academic journal articles from four disciplines: chemistry, computer science, economics, and linguistics from 2019 to 2020, with a total of 464706 words. The research steps include: 1) Based on Chinese examples of particles and examples of nouns and verbs in the dictionary, 2442 examples were retrieved, and 1804 analysis objects were obtained after screening; 2) Summarize 8 functional meanings related to examples and name them as 8 examples of functional terms; 3) Using these terms to conduct local grammar analysis on the examples in the corpus, revealing the semantic patterns of Chinese academic examples discourse behavior.

4 Results and Discussion

This chapter presents the results of local grammar analysis in Chinese academic discourse and discusses them. Researchers reported 13 local grammar patterns with a frequency of 10 or more per million words, which are considered as examples of frequently used local grammar patterns in Chinese academic discourse. These forms are classified and displayed into 5 groups based on their discourse functional characteristics.

5 Conclusion

Based on the corpus of Chinese academic papers, this study adopts a local grammar perspective to analyze and illustrate discourse behaviors, revealing their patterns of meaning expression and teaching value. Research has found that citing examples is a frequently used discourse behavior and argumentation method in Chinese academic discourse; The example language of Chinese academic discourse contains 8 main meanings, organized into 13 high-frequency local grammar forms, corresponding to different discourse functional characteristics, reflecting the meaning rules of Chinese academic example discourse behavior; These rules of meaning reveal the essential attributes of academic discourse driven by meaning, closely related to communicative purposes and academic content, and tend to be used in a concentrated manner. Partial grammar can systematically describe the semantic rules followed by Chinese academic discourse behavior, providing new entry points and resources for expressing meaning in teaching Chinese academic writing as a foreign language. This study is the first attempt to apply local grammar to the study of Chinese academic discourse. In the future, it can be expanded to more discourse behaviors, establish local grammar for various academic discourse behaviors, and comprehensively explore the language use patterns and teaching methods of Chinese academic discourse.
