1 Introduction

As an important medium for global sports exchange and cultural dissemination, the translation quality of sports news has a profound impact on the shaping of national image. In recent years, with the development of the sports industry and the increasing attention to sports news, research on English Chinese translation has become a hot topic. This article is based on the theory of translation commonality and uses corpus methods to compare and analyze the language characteristics of English translated sports news and English original texts, aiming to provide reference for sports news translation in China, improve translation quality, and promote international sports cultural exchange.

2 Literature Review

Baker proposed the hypothesis of translation commonality, which holds that translated texts have characteristics of non source language texts, divided into four types: simplification, explicitation, standardization, and neatness. Simplification refers to the tendency of language simplification in translation, explicitation refers to the translator's explicit expression of implicit information in the source language, and standardization refers to the translation following the typical patterns of the target language. Existing research has mostly focused on texts such as novels, government documents, and poetry, with relatively little research on the commonalities of sports news translation. This study uses corpus method to compare and analyze the language characteristics of English translated sports news and English original sports news, and explores whether English translated sports news conforms to the common translation hypothesis, aiming to provide reference for sports news translation in China.

3 Research Design

This chapter uses a comparable corpus method to compare the linguistic differences between English translated sports news and English original sports news. Two sub libraries have been constructed: English Translated Sports News (TSN) and English Original Sports News (WSN), which share similarities in terms of domain, language type, and time span. The research focuses on three dimensions: simplification, visualization, and standardization, using corpus retrieval tools for comparative and quantitative analysis. Simplify dimensional analysis of vocabulary features, examine the frequency of use of conjunctions and personal pronouns through explicit trends, and explore nominalization phenomena and passive voice features through normative assumptions. Explore the reasons for differences through specific examples.

4 Research Results and Analysis

This chapter explores in depth the translation commonalities in sports news English translation. By analyzing language features such as vocabulary diversity, sentence length, high-frequency words, vocabulary density, use of conjunctions, personal pronoun subjects, nominalization, and passive voice, it reveals the trends of simplification, manifestation, and standardization in the translation process. Research has found that the vocabulary richness of English translated sports news (TSN) is higher than that of English original sports news (WSN), with longer average sentence length, lower proportion of high-frequency words, and higher vocabulary density. These characteristics indicate that TSN has higher text difficulty, low readability, and does not conform to the trend of simplification. In terms of manifestation, the frequency of using conjunctions in TSN is higher than that in WSN, and the use of personal pronouns as subjects is also more frequent, indicating that the logical relationship between sentences is clearer and the subject is clearer during the translation process. In terms of standardization, TSN exhibits more pronounced nominalization and passive voice usage, which is consistent with the characteristics of formal English writing. Through chi square test, the study confirmed that these differences are statistically significant, further supporting the existence of simplification, visualization, and normalization trends. These findings provide empirical support for understanding the translation commonalities in English translation of sports news, and provide useful references for translation practice and teaching.

5 Conclusion

This chapter summarizes the language feature analysis of English translated sports news based on the theory of translation commonality. Research has found that translating sports news into English has high vocabulary density, rich vocabulary, long word and sentence lengths, and high vocabulary difficulty, which is inconsistent with the simplification hypothesis; Connective words and personal pronouns are frequently used, supporting the assumption of explicitness; Frequent nominalization and passive voice indicate a tendency towards standardization. The translation of sports news into English suffers from excessive nominalization and insufficient emotional expression, resulting in a monotonous and boring reading experience. To improve translation quality, it is necessary to break the rigid translation mode, deeply understand the differences between English and Chinese languages, balance emotions and objectivity, use standardized and rational language, and vividly and professionally present sports scenes.
