Regional and country studies, as an important field for university think tanks, play a crucial role in policy consultation, media advocacy, talent development, and public opinion guidance. With the promotion of the "the Belt and Road" initiative, the importance of regional country studies has become increasingly prominent. In 2022, regional and national studies were officially included in the discipline catalog, becoming an emerging interdisciplinary field that reflects the needs of the times. Regional ethnology focuses on specific countries or regions as research objects, with unique research value and theoretical methods, aiming to provide academic support for government decision-making. The development goals of this discipline are highly consistent with the functions of university think tanks, and the two complement each other. In the new situation, exploring how regional studies can better serve national strategies and think tank missions is an important task facing the academic community.

1、 The history and experience of the development of regional and national research think tanks in universities

This article reviews the 60 year development history of regional and national research think tanks in universities, emphasizes the importance of physical construction, points out the shortcomings of early think tanks in scientific research capabilities, and the national requirements for full coverage and specialization of national and regional research. At the same time, the shortcomings of foreign language colleges in regional and national studies were analyzed, such as the lack of clear research directions and expertise, and the difficulty of research results in meeting the needs of the country for major practical issues.

2、 The interdisciplinary construction of regional and national research think tanks in universities is an inevitable product of the development of the times

Emphasis was placed on the importance of building the discipline of philosophy and social sciences with Chinese characteristics under the call of General Secretary Xi Jinping. Since 2011, interdisciplinary exploration in the field of regional and national studies has been carried out under disciplines such as economics, history, political science, and foreign languages and literature, forming a construction concept of interdisciplinary collaboration. The interdisciplinary characteristics of regional and national studies are reflected in the following aspects: the integration of interdisciplinary knowledge systems driven by major practical needs, the core of new quality research and the field of New Territories research are important indicators of integration, the coordination of primary and secondary majors is a key factor in integration, and composite professional talents are the basic support for integration. These characteristics collectively drive the development of regional and national disciplines to adapt to national strategies and promote the exchange of diverse civilizations.

3、 The core of regional and national research think tanks in universities is talent output
