AI 摘要

1 Introduction

Globalization, as a social phenomenon, has had a profound impact since the 1980s, involving the exchange and integration of culture, lifestyle, values, and ideology. Dong Jie and Brumart proposed "mobile sociolinguistics", which focuses on the role of language as a communicative resource in different temporal and spatial frameworks. The continuous changes in cities and languages bring about an increase in spatial resources and communication symbols, and language users are exposed to new language and spatial resources in social interactions. Pennycook believes that space is the process of language practice, constructing the meaning of symbol space and physical space. Xiang proposed the "nearby" perspective, emphasizing the importance of community space and authentic communication. This study adopts ethnographic methods to explore the characteristics of the language landscape of community cafes in the context of globalization, as well as the roles of time and space in the dynamic changes of language landscape, through the theory of spatiotemporal volume. The research is conducted within the frameworks of mobile sociolinguistics and urban sociolinguistics.

Research on Language Landscape from the Perspective of Mobile Sociolinguistics

Urban linguists understand the characteristics of local language life by studying language landscapes, which are an important component of urban linguistics. The language landscape has variability and involves multiple disciplinary fields. The research focus has shifted from static distribution to dynamic movement, focusing on the interaction between language, vision, spatial practice, and cultural dimensions. The research object extends to atypical urban language landscapes, such as markets, cafes, etc., focusing on the relationship between language resources and urban space. The interaction between localization and globalization, coffee shops are typical places where daily interactions generate new spatial practices, language and symbol resources are created and reconstructed, shaping new cultural identities and spatial meanings.

3 Research Methods

This chapter introduces research methods, focusing on a community caf é in Liangzhu Culture Village, Yuhang District, Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province. By analyzing the daily activities of the caf é, it explores the interweaving of local globalization and daily life practices. The caf é is operated by local residents and provides coffee, desserts, and shared spaces. Its decoration and operation are jointly completed by family members. The researchers used a combination of online and offline ethnographic methods to collect data on the construction process of language symbol space in coffee shops through participant observation, interviews, and filming. Data analysis adopts the theory of spatiotemporal volume to explore how language landscapes construct meaning in specific time and space, and how these landscapes dynamically develop over time. The study focuses on the materiality of language landscapes, such as signs, posters, etc., as well as their temporal and spatial significance.

Spatiotemporal analysis of language landscape in 4 community cafes

This chapter analyzes the language landscape of community cafes through online and offline ethnographic methods, using spatiotemporal theory. The study distinguishes between two types: "regular spatiotemporal entities" and "transient spatiotemporal entities". The conventional spatiotemporal entity refers to the continuous existence of linguistic symbols in space, such as signs and decorations in coffee shops, which reflect the juxtaposition of multilingual symbols brought about by the global flow of objects. Transient spatiotemporal entities focus on the dynamic changes in language landscapes, such as promotional materials related to holiday activities, which disappear with the end of the event.

5 Conclusion

The study takes the community caf é in Liangzhu Cultural Village, Hangzhou as a case study to explore the presentation of language landscape from the perspective of spatiotemporal theory, especially how people and objects affect the flow and dissemination of language symbols in global mobility. The study focuses on the flow of language resources and finds that globally flowing goods have become carriers of language and symbols, promoting the global dissemination of language and symbols. They are juxtaposed in local community cafes, interacting with people, and constructing a space where multilingual symbols coexist. Through the analysis of temporal and spatial entities, the presentation and disappearance of language and symbols in space, as well as the creativity and communication skills of coffee shop owners, and their response and care for the needs of community neighbors, are revealed.
