1 Introduction

The study of translation commonalities reveals that translated language has regular features; The abstract is a crucial part of a scientific paper and is essential for international communication; The English translation of abstracts from petroleum science journals plays an important role in enhancing international influence; This study is based on a self built corpus to analyze the language features of English translations of petroleum journal abstracts and verify the hypothesis of translation commonalities.

Overview of Common Research in Translation

The study of translation commonalities originated from Baker's (1993) viewpoint that translated texts have universal characteristics and that translated languages have uniqueness. The research is divided into two periods: pre corpus and corpus based. The former mainly studies the features of translated texts through interlingual comparison, while the latter uses corpora to test the simplification, visualization, and standardization of translated texts. Chesterman (2004) divided translation commonalities into source language commonalities and target language commonalities. The former focuses on the relationship between the source text and the translated text, while the latter focuses on the relationship between the translated text and the original text in the target language. The research methods include parallel corpora and monolingual analogical corpora, which are used to examine interlingual and intralingual commonalities, respectively. This study uses a monolingual analogy corpus to compare the English translated abstracts of petroleum journal articles with original abstracts from international petroleum journals, and explores the common features in translated abstracts.

3 Corpus Introduction

Introduced the corpus construction process used in the research. Researchers selected abstracts from five domestic and international academic journals in the petroleum industry based on their impact factors and expert opinions. Use web crawling tools to crawl Chinese abstracts and their English translated abstracts from the journal's official website, as well as original English abstracts on the Web of Science website. Finally, 2500 abstracts were randomly selected from those published between 2016 and 2020 to form the Translation Abstracts Corpus (TEA) and the Original Abstracts Corpus (WEA), both of which had similar numbers of symbols.

4 Discussion and Analysis

By comparing the lexical and syntactic features of TEA (translation abstract) and WEA (original abstract), this study explores whether petroleum science translation texts conform to the common translation hypothesis. The study analyzes from three perspectives: simplification, visualization, and standardization.

5 Summary

Based on the translation of petroleum journal abstracts, this study constructs a monolingual comparable corpus and analyzes the lexical and syntactic features of English translated abstracts and English original abstracts. The results show that the vocabulary diversity of translated abstracts is low, with long and short words, many high-frequency words, low readability, and a trend towards simplification; But with high vocabulary density, long sentences, and complexity. The use of conjunctions is frequent and their explicit features are not obvious. Low level of creativity, high repetition of high-frequency words, widespread nominalization, reflecting a trend towards standardization. The translation abstract conforms to the normalization assumption, but does not fully comply with the simplification and visualization assumptions.
