The discussion section plays an important role in academic papers, as it is a crucial link for authors to express their views, transform research findings into new knowledge, and communicate with readers. The study of academic paper genres extensively involves multiple disciplines, but there is relatively little research on the discussion section of papers in agricultural journals, especially in animal medicine. This study conducts a genre analysis of the discussion section of international traditional and new agricultural animal medicine journal articles in the context of the New Agricultural Science. The aim is to reveal the distribution and implementation differences of different language steps and levels, in order to promote the understanding of scientific research writing norms and improve the writing level of Chinese animal medicine journal article researchers.
Introduced research methods, including corpus collection and genre analysis framework. The research team conducted in-depth interviews with a research team specializing in animal medicine at a Double First Class Agricultural University in Northeast China, and determined the research corpus for the discussion section of animal medicine journal articles under the background of the new agricultural science. A total of 30 papers were selected, including 15 from traditional animal medicine journals and 15 from new agricultural animal medicine journals. The total number of words in the corpus is 93348 and 109382, respectively. The study adopted Yang U0026 Allison's (2003) step level analysis framework and made modifications and adjustments to it, forming a step level analysis framework suitable for this study.
By analyzing the discussion sections of 30 traditional and new agricultural animal medicine journal articles, the differences in step structure and level usage were revealed. Research has found that Step 2 (indicating research results) is the most frequently used in two journals, followed by Step 1 (introducing research background). The frequency of using steps 3 (summarizing research results), 4 (evaluating experimental research), and 5 (pointing out research implications) is relatively low. This indicates that authors of animal medicine journals are more inclined to introduce research background and results, while there is less discussion on summarization, evaluation, and implications. The structure of language steps has similarities between traditional and new agricultural journals, both of which follow academic writing norms.
This study used a modified step level analysis framework to conduct genre comparison analysis on the discussion sections of 30 animal medicine journal articles. New agricultural journals have a higher frequency of using phrases such as "research background information," "indicating research results," "evaluating experimental research," and "pointing out research insights" than traditional journals. In terms of language level usage, the New Agricultural Science Journal has a higher proportion of "interpreting research results," "pointing out research significance and contribution," and "indicating research limitations," while the frequency of language level usage is lower for "comparative research results," "explaining results," and "elucidating future research. ESP teachers should have a deep understanding of the genre characteristics of academic journal articles in the context of interdisciplinary backgrounds, and help students write high-quality academic papers.
