This article introduces the definition, characteristics, and application of Academic English (EAP) in teaching, and outlines the types and features of existing EAP corpora. It is pointed out that there is a lack of large-scale and standardized academic English corpora in the field of mining engineering, and the existing corpora are small in scale, inconsistent in standards, and limited in time span. The aim of this study is to construct a Mining Engineering Academic English Corpus (MineDEAP) to support EAP research and teaching in this field.
Under the DEAP Academic English Corpus framework, this study focuses on the field of mining engineering, with the goal of constructing a 5 million word academic English full-text corpus that includes all secondary disciplines, major language categories, and high-level SCI journal articles to support teaching, textbook writing, dictionary compilation, language research, interdisciplinary comparison, academic discourse system construction, and international communication.
Detailed description of the creation process of the MineDEAP Mining Engineering Academic English Corpus. Firstly, based on the discipline catalog and journal citation reports of the Ministry of Education, the top three journals in Q1 area of the three secondary disciplines of mining engineering were selected as the corpus source. After expert recommendation, seven journals were ultimately selected. We collected 829 articles published in these journals between 2016 and 2022, including research papers, review papers, and corresponding articles, with a total word count of 5169118 symbols. In the stage of corpus collection and organization, the literature is converted into Word documents, then cleaned and saved in TXT format, removing unnecessary information such as author institutions, funding, etc., and numbered according to certain naming rules. The workload of text cleaning is heavy, and the project team has conducted trial processing and internal cross checking to ensure quality. Finally, the metadata of each literature is summarized and saved in an Excel file, including information on secondary disciplines, publishers, journal names, etc., recorded based on the online publication time.
The MineDEAP corpus, as a DEAP sub library, has been released on the BFSU CQPweb platform for resource sharing. It has unique advantages in linguistic research, teaching research, and practice, and can provide quantitative support for the study of academic English language features in mining engineering. By combining other sub libraries of DEAP, we can explore the common features and interdisciplinary differences of academic English. As a reference library for academic English corpora of learners, it provides research references for second language learners. In teaching, by providing large-scale authentic corpora, teachers can use corpus software to analyze the results and select representative materials, making the teaching content more prominent and practical. By incorporating data-driven learning and other teaching methods into instructional design, heuristic teaching and student adaptive learning are promoted. In addition, it is widely used in the creation of professional English word lists, compilation of textbooks and dictionaries, language testing, and other fields, providing reference for intelligent language teaching in the digital environment.
