TikTok, as a short video software developed by Chinese enterprise ByteDance, is widely popular in overseas markets, especially among teenagers. However, it has faced concerns from technology companies and the government in the United States, and even faced bans. The study focuses on the media coverage of TikTok in China and the United States from 2020 to 2022, constructing a comparative corpus of People's Daily (overseas edition) and The New York Times, using the Fairclough three-dimensional theory model to analyze language and intertextual features, and exploring ideological differences. The research aims to enhance the public's critical understanding of technology news and deepen their understanding of Chinese American culture and relations.
Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) is a research framework that studies the relationship between language, power, and ideology, revealing social power relations and ideology through discourse analysis. Fairclough proposed that discourse is the use of language in social relationships and processes, reflecting social reality. Hardt Mautner first applied corpus methods to CDA, improving the objectivity and representativeness of the analysis. Tang Liping believes that the role of corpus linguistics in CDA lies in batch processing of discourse products and conducting lexical and grammatical analysis. News discourse often contains ideological content, and CDA helps to reveal these contents. In the past, CDA research focused more on political and economic topics, while TikTok involves technology issues and has an indirect and covert relationship with ideology. The dispute between China and the United States over TikTok has not yet been resolved, and this study can provide inspiration for dispute resolution.
This paper introduces the research design of corpus based critical discourse analysis of TikTok news reports by Chinese and American media. The theoretical framework adopts Fairclough's three-dimensional discourse analysis model, which includes text, discourse practice, and socio-cultural practice, as well as their interrelationships. In terms of research methods, combining quantitative and qualitative analysis, AntConc 4.1.2 and UAM Corpus Tool 6 tools were used to construct small corpora of People's Daily (Overseas Edition) and New York Times, covering the period from July 2020 to July 2022. The research aims to explore the characteristics and differences between two corpora in terms of textual language features, intertextuality, and ideology, and analyze the socio-cultural factors behind these differences.
A critical discourse analysis was conducted on the corpus of news reports on TikTok by Chinese and American media using AntConc software. The study found that both corpora focus on TikTok's political and economic relevance and popularity in areas such as politics, commerce, media, technology applications, and social impact. The CDY corpus focuses more on international perspectives, specific functions, and global influence, while the NYT corpus focuses more on American perspectives, core technologies, and subjective feelings.
The research is based on the construction of a corpus of TikTok reports from People's Daily (overseas edition) and The New York Times from 2020 to 2022, and uses the Fairclough 3D model for critical discourse analysis. The results show that the two media outlets have different topic word choices and emphasis when describing TikTok, with the CDY corpus being more objective and the NYT corpus having a more absolute or casual tone. In terms of intertextuality, the CDY corpus enhances text authenticity, while the NYT corpus reduces transparency. The contextual explanation reveals the political and economic attitudes and cultural roots behind the media in China and the United States. The research is limited by the small size of the corpus, lack of temporal comparison, and insufficient comprehensive analysis of textual descriptions. I look forward to further enriching the analysis of news discourse on technology topics through future research.
