Mr. Huang Yan was one of the first group of university students after the resumption of the college entrance examination in 1977. After obtaining his bachelor's and master's degrees from Nanjing University, he went to the University of Cambridge in the UK for further studies, becoming the first Chinese international student to receive a full scholarship from the University of Cambridge. In Cambridge, he studied under Stephen Levinson and obtained a doctoral degree. His doctoral thesis was approved without defense due to its excellence. Mr. Huang Yan worked as a researcher and was elected as an academician at Churchill College, Cambridge University. He later taught at Oxford University and the University of Reading in the UK, and eventually became a professor and department head of linguistics at the University of Auckland in New Zealand. He has conducted in-depth research in the fields of New Grice pragmatics, semantics, syntax, etc., and proposed and developed the "Huang Yan Theory". His works have had a wide influence in the international linguistic community.
