introduction

This article introduces Sun Sanjun and Ren Wen's (2019) sorting out the writing modes of master's theses in translation, summarizing eight typical modes and categorizing them briefly. Special mention was made of the case analysis report on the translation classroom adopted by the Beijing Foreign Studies University College of Translation. Based on the practice materials and recordings of the interpreting classroom, student problems were analyzed and coping strategies were explored. The article points out the commonly used analytical frameworks, but does not explicitly state the UMEER framework. This article will elaborate on the application and improvement of the UMEER framework in the writing of interpreting practice reports, emphasizing its broad applicability in the academic writing of interpreting students.

The application of UMEER analysis framework

Since 2017, MTI graduates from Beijing Foreign Studies University have been using the UMEER analysis framework to write interpreting practice reports. This framework has gradually been adopted by other departments, schools, and students of different languages. On December 21, 2023, according to a search on China National Knowledge Infrastructure, there were over 40 reports using the UMEER framework, covering scenarios such as consecutive interpretation, simultaneous interpretation, on-site translation, simulated meetings, and classroom teaching. Not only English majors, but also students majoring in Arabic, Japanese, Spanish, and other fields are applying it. 18 master's theses come from Beijing Foreign Studies University, while the rest come from universities across the country. The graduation thesis of Jia Runzhe (2017) guided by the author demonstrated the initial structure of the UMEER framework, which is clear in structure and content and worthy of promotion. However, the existing framework has shortcomings and lacks analysis of successful cases. The author will propose a more comprehensive framework.

Improved UMEER analysis framework

Suggestions for improving the UMEER analysis framework were proposed, emphasizing the importance of not only focusing on failed cases but also increasing the analysis of successful cases during analysis. The improved framework includes five parts: background introduction, interpretation preparation process, analysis framework introduction, translation gains and losses analysis, and conclusion. The background introduction section elaborates on the importance of the event background, including information about the event organizer, speakers, attendees, as well as translation methods and the target audience of the interpreter's services. The completion status section outlines the main events, activity completion status, and translator interactions. The significance of writing a practical report lies in demonstrating translation ability and summarizing experience, while the writing method is summarized through case analysis.

The characteristics and value of UMEER analysis framework

Identified the problems in the current writing of MTI students' interpreting practice reports, such as the lack of interpreting characteristics, disconnection between theory and practice, biased analysis, and academic style of practice reports. Taking the interpretation practice report found on China National Knowledge Infrastructure as an example, this paper analyzes students' application of theory and discussion of translation strategies in the report, and points out that these analyses are often not closely related to actual interpretation practice. At the same time, the chapter emphasizes the advantages of the UMEER analysis framework, believing that it can encourage students to comprehensively review the experiences and lessons learned in interpreting activities and form good translation habits. The UMEER framework is inclusive and can be flexibly applied regardless of whether theoretical analysis is introduced. The chapter also discusses the application of theory in interpreting practice reports, and suggests avoiding excessive theorization and combining theory with practical cases. In addition, the chapter mentions the CEA framework and related works previously proposed by the author, pointing out the shortcomings of these achievements in the writing of interpreting practice reports. It is hoped that the UMEER analysis framework can promote teachers and students to adjust the focus of interpreting teaching and develop it into a universally followed teaching and practice framework.
